As I had to replace the BCM anyway (2008 2LT) I took this opportunity to take the old one apart to see how it looks like inside. Here it is:

Hmmm...chipsets, surface mounted components, and soooooo many opportunities for a cold solder joint to render it useless.

There are days when I really miss Rochester Carbs and setting the point gap with a dime and a pack of paper matches.

The wife is right, since my hair has gone totally gray, I'm suffering from a textbook case of "Old Fartitude with Concurrent 'Well in my day you young whipper snappers, we'd buy 10 cents worth of Ethyl and drive all week on it' Syndrome".
