Good...wasn't assuming that it was because of the steering. Not a big fan of the drive by wire. Good to know

I wasn't saying you. I've just been through the whole drive by wire debate before and the assumption that electronically assisted steering means drive by wire seems fairly common.

No dealership or quick lube place will ever change the oil in my personal vehicles. Unless you are just not capable of doing it yourself, you should learn. You would be surprised how much time and money it will save you. And you know it's done right and no bolt's in aluminum oil pans overtightened.

Plus you know the work was actually done....... If you haven't seen the "Jiffy Lube" scam videos, do some search. You might be .

$25 for M1 and filter
20 min of pease and quiet for me

Or

Pay whatever you pay someplace
Wait at least an hour (on average)
Hope they did what you asked
Hope other issues didn't "pop" up after or during......

I will be a typical stupid woman and take advantage of the lifetime free oil changes my dealership gave me for as long as I own a Chevy from them. Can't argue much with free. If something goes wrong...they will fix it.

Nothing stupid about that at all. In fact I would call that pretty smart .

Yeah, like "Mr. C your transmission fluid is dirty and needs to be changed. We can do that right now while your car is on the lift. It's only $130". $130 and they weren't even going to change the gaskets. New fluid, new gaskets.

However, there are times when it is advantageous to have the dealership do an oil change and they find legitimate problems. I've had suspension problems discovered when they were doing tire rotations, oil pan leaks discovered during an oil change. All taken care of under warranty.

Even though I've never done an oil change before, I'd like to start doing my own oil changes, especially since they are easy to do on the HHR.
Warranty and my unpredictable arthritis flare ups are the only things making me sit on the fence about it right now.

Solman....

I agree with your basic premise....

But, doesn't it scare you when someone says (or writes)....

1. How do I do it?
2. What tools do I need?
3. What kind of oil should I use?
4. Where is the filter and how is it removed?
5. How is the oil removed?

etc. etc. etc.

My point is, someone who is going to accept the challenge of changing their own oil and filter, probably should be shown. Trying to explain, in writing, an oil change to a complete novice, is difficult.

Hhhhmmmm, maybe a Stickey how-to.

Here is a link that explains how to do it for a Cobalt, which is basically the same as the HHR: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/WebX?14@@.f0f9603/7

The info originally came from a site that was a tad on the religious side, so I opted not to post that link.

The only things that were left out of the info in that link is the torque spec, which according to the GM tech manual/SI, is 18 ft-lb and the crush washer.
