Spinning Snows

I have a set of studded Winterforce Tires on my HHR. Today, coming home for lunch, I was going up a small hill at a stop sign, and the tires spun out and traction control kicked in, but I still couldn't make it up the small incline.... I had to back it up and go at it again without stopping... is this something I should be concerned about? I've done about 150 miles of dry pavement driving the last few weekends or so.

Thanks!
Andy

No Snow tires will help performance but they can and will still slip in the snow. As cold as it is and as much ice as there is this should be no suprise. I suspect there was a more ice there than you think. Here in Ohio it has been black ice everywere.

Tires are just part of the equation. Road conditions, type of vehicle and driver skill make up the rest.

That is why you still see 4x4's with 4 winter tires in ditiches.

Not really, while traction control is great, its not the best from a dead stop. You got a little momentum and that is the way it works best.

Our 02 Sunfire with T/C is a tank going uphill on all-seasons, but like you its not good from a dead stop

Some times you also need to turn of the traction control if it is kicking in too much and you need to spin.

In the past driver skill rulled now with these new car it is more system managment. You just have to manage the TC, ESC and ABS today.

The HHR with these system is so very easy to drive. The only problem with this vehicle is deep snow. Like most FWD the snow can build under the nose and limit traction.

In fact the HHR is a boring vehicle to drive in snow vs many others. That is a good thing for many.

If you can't make it the first try just do what you did and try again.

I think the key is studded snow tires and dry pavement. Studs are best on hard packed snow or ice, and (IMHO) kinda worthless on dry pavement. TC or not.
