Vinyl replacing rear fender guard?

Is it a good idea to use clear vinyl to replace the rear fender guards?

I bought a certified HHR two months ago, and added mud flaps, but already saw some minor sandblast on the rear fender guard. Since the guard does not cover the whole area, I am afraid something really bad will happen after this winter.

The reason I don't consider running boards is that they don't solve the problem, they hide it. In stead of rusty fenders, the HHR will end up with rusty running boards after a few years.

If clear vinyl can provide sufficient protection, I don't mind removing the ugly fender guards.

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

I saw an hhr, in a parking lot, with the clear vinyl across the bottom of the 2 doors and on the rear fender. If it's done right, it's hardly noticeable. But if it was me, I would try for the heavier vinyl that was used for several years on the GM trucks.

Oh, I'm not sure, but I believe the running boards are a type of fiberglass....thus no rusting. I'll check tomorrow for sure.

Wow, I don't know that. I gotta reconsider it.

Just had boards put on mine...they are like a fiberglass material...no chipping since I put them on. Changes the look of the car also. I would recomend!

I need to find a good price on running boards. I know they are easy to install.
