GM 15938134 SS Auto CV Half Shaft

Well to satisfy yourself you could get uder the car and observe the geometry while your lovely assist ant turns the steering wheel.
I believe you will find that the inner joint moves in/out only when the bearing moves up/down. That's why a CV joint on the outer and a tri-pot on the inner.
There is an illustration of the tri-pot in the above referenced thread. It is a slip joint that allows for up/down. Variable rates don't have anything to do with it.
With the car on a rack and the suspension fully suspended the axle length would be at it's greatest and when it is parallel to the ground at it's shortest. It won't slip front/back unless something is very wrong.

Honestly, my intentions by posting here are to find someone that might by chance have a new GM 15938134 half shaft that can be used as a pattern so duplicate upgraded versions can be produced to benefit HHR SS automatic owners needing correct replacement shafts without any doubts or guesswork.

Honestly. Since they are almost impossible to find (and always have been), I doubt that anyone has a spare "new in box" one in their parts collection.
Just a heads up if you don't get any responses to your question.

Hay, I have one , a new OEM part# 15938134, & you guys have got me
interested in comparing it to a GM8206.
So today I did some measurements on the 15938134.
It's 21-3/8" long compressed, & the shaft in the middle is 1-1/16" in diameter.
I'm going to Advance Auto Parts this morning to pickup one of there in-house
CV axles, a 'Carquest' GM8206, which is part# NCV10622.
I will compare the 2 & update this thread...
Ok, they both weight the same, appox: 14.3 lbs.
Shaft is the same size.
The GM8206 is 3/8" longer, when under compression.
The aftermarket Advance Auto Parts GM8206 doesn't feel like a quality piece, it's kind of 'toy-like', which reminds me of most 'China' knock offs..
Hay, what to you want for $55
It compresses quite easily, & feels, & moves too easily compared to the 'solid' feel of the OEM piece.
It will work on a stock HHR SS, but is 3/8" longer under compression.
GM does have a '8206' & the part# 13079129 is over $300..., & I would bet that it would be better, but it would still be 3/8" to long, but will work.
When looking for a GM8206, this is the best car info to use:
2005 Chevy Malibu Maxx LS, or Maxx LT as they both have the 3.5 V6.
The Ipad photo makes the 'GM8206' look alot longer than it is.
That's why a took a photo with the yardstick, to show the 3/4" difference in length, when at rest.
But this doesn't mean anything, as under compression is how to properly compare CV axle shaft length.
You can find rebuildable used HHR SS axles in the bone-yard.
http://www.novakautoparts.com/parts-search
This yard about an hour from me has both left/right at $50 each, with 90+k miles on them.
Just use the 'search' parts feature on your bone-yard site.
