Upon a relook at the connectors I posted; they look like the GAUGE side. so go to the GM dealer and purchase one with the appropriate pins. Once you crimo the wires onto the pins you just push them into the proper hole until they click. No tool required to install.
The part numbers are mixed up. Indeed the HHR is opposite the Cobalt, the drawings are actually what is incorrect for the HHR.

Yours is the first picture I have seen of the correct end coming off the gauge.
A FB friend sent me a connector, but it only has three wires and I think I am going to just hit up a GM parts counter at a dealer to see what they have.

Not that simple. Both of the black connectors are THE SAME. Each one has four male and four female connections, but they are THE SAME connections, in the same orientation not each one's opposite.
I was looking at the plastic plugs, not the pins.
One has a "lock tab" and the other has the "tab" for it to lock into.
The OD (outside diameter) are different for both connectors.
Getting the correct pins and putting them in the correct pin locations should be all you have to do.

Casa's pic shows what looks to be 2 female plug ends that won't connect.
Both of ours have the same female plug on the left. His just has a non-match plug on his donor A-pillar.

Sorry George his picture to me is male and female plastic plugs. Tag on one, clip on the other.
Look at the picture you posted on your connector plugs.
A different view of Casa's plugs. Pins in both. Same latch connector.
If need be, I'll ride over to his house and verify. He just lives down the road from me.
Well anyway, I confirmed they are opposite Cobalt/HHR. Kind of strange, only one side is widely available and then by the 100 count. I think the male side is used for a few other things.
I am guessing the one with only 3 wire is missing the dimmer wire. So only bright baklight.
