This is by far the longest running thread I've seen on this forum! It's gonna take me awhile to read it all. But there is lot's of great advice here!
I'm sure the answers I seek are somewhere in these 70 pages, but I haven't found them yet. I want to do this steering wheel control mod right the fisrt time.

My HHR is an '07, and I just have 2 questions:
1. What are the correct part numbers for a "raised button" switch, and a "silver" module/cover?

2. The 3 parts on "GMPartsDirect.com" total $81, now in 2011, after shipping and handling. Can anyone suggest a cheaper, reliable source for the parts required for this cool mod?

Thanks!

For that price you might get the whole used leather steering wheel with the controls. A few gm cars have them.

Going for it

Hello all,

Great Info, thank to all who posted. I'm going to do this in the near future, not sure if i'll do the 3 parts or the complete steering wheel, sorta depends on what parts I find where.

If anyone has any left over parts let me know.

I have 2009 LS w/RPO code 14B/14I

Thanx in Advance.

I have a 09 HHR lt and I've attempted to complete this mod a few times, but I can't get the steering wheel cover off. Even my brother who worked for a chevy dealership and has the strength of a gorilla can't get the metal clips to come free. I understand you need some strength, but my brother and I have to be doing something wrong if we can't get the clips free.

You do not need a gorilla. Just use a poking tool on the holes in each side of the steering wheel to push the tabs that hold the air bag on. I think that I remember pics somewhere in this thread. I had no problem with a long Allen wrench, one side at a time.

You don’t need any strength. If you can find my post on this very long thread look at it. My problem after using too much “strength” and bending the latches inside the cover was that I would release one side and with the tight fit of my airbag/cover that one side would re-latch before I got the other side loose. This confused me, like I guess you are now.

Get two appropriately sized probes, use them both at the same time and then have somebody else lift off the airbag/cover.

After you get it off you will be so surprised just how easy it is.

I’m over stating the “bending” of the latches, but mine are bent a bit – it does not effect their operation. Otherwise, I did no damage.
