Adding radio buttons on steering wheel
#841
Yup, it was a calculated risk by going forward, lol. I actually think I was programming the stupid aftermarket interface wrong. If it's working fine with the stock radio, it should work with a properly working or programmed aftermarket steering wheel control.

Between 2008 and 2011 HHR changed the colors and positions of the connectors. My guess is the same with Cobalt. Tell me the year of Cobalt and I can check.
2008 Cobalt is different from 2008 HHR, same as 2011 HHR.

Thanks! Sounds like I should be good to go. I'm trying to upgrade the firmware on the Axxess controller and it's not taking so I think that may have something to do with it. Might have to make a run to Best Buy in the morning.

Had to go radio silent because this thing was ticking me off. I finally got the steering wheel controls figured out. It wasn't the steering wheel that was causing the problem, it was the install directions for the Axxess ASWC-1 harness that goes along with the GMOS-LAN-03. Contrary to the instructions listed listed below DO NOT CUT THE GREEN/ORANGE wire!

Axxess tech services was extremely helpful once I bit the bullet and called after struggling with it on the weekend. Now everything works fine. I searched online to resolve this and a few others had the same issue. Hopefully this will show up in any related Google search.
One other thing, be careful when you order anything non-OEM online. I ordered a new Pioneer radio harness which I thought was OEM but it wasn't - it was pinned incorrectly so I had to learn a new skill - depinning wires from a harness.

Worn button fix
If anyone decides to do the steering wheel replace and the new one has crappy buttons, here's an option I used. Picked this up on eBay for around $10. Only two were really bad but it was bugging me and I wanted to see how it would work. There are YouTube videos on how to replace them - all. I will ad it be careful you don't mess up the good buttons doing this. I scraped a lot of the old paint off but I think all you really need to scrape is enough over the particular indicator on the button. You can use a marker to touch up the little spots too. Let's see how they hold up.
