Well I just did this swap on my 09 SS and now it won't start! I don't get it, I made sure the tensioner was sprung out to create tension, put it in and motor won't turn over! It cranks but that's it. I even put the old one back in and still won't start! What could have happened?! I'm desperate for help!

Double check your steps , any electrical connections, sensors not connected.
Did you take the valve cover off to ensure the tensioner was engaged?
You might need to double check again , the timing chain may have jumped a tooth.

i did not remove the valve cover. i have a feeling i jumped time when the old one came out..... i am screwed I think!

Time to pull the valve cover and the timing chain cover to see.
Don't turn it over anymore, you might get lucky

nope! not good for me
car is at a local shop getting timing re-set and hopefully i did not damage any valves in the process......
ALL I CAN SAY IS DO NOT DO THIS ON AN SS WITHOUT PULLING THE VALVE COVER AND MAKING SURE THE CHAIN DOES NOT MOVE WHEN SWAPPING.
when i pulled my valve cover the bronze link that should be on the bottom where the crank is was at the top in between the cam gears... not good!!
the really bad and stupid thing on my part is the fact the old one i pulled out was the same as the new one, so it ALREADY had the new one in it!!
kicking myself for not double checking the head on the tensioner to compare before i pulled it out.

The chain with the bottom link up top just means it was not at TDC for the compression stroke but the exhaust stroke.
I've changed these tensioners on 14 Ecotecs 4 being 2.0 SS's, I've never taken the valve cover off, never lost parts from the old one , never had the new not engage.

its me Oldblue, i have the worst luck ever!! i had the tensioner extended, took it apart and reset it, when i got it started it popped back to extended and i thought all was good till i tried starting it. then i pulled it out, put the old one back in extended, which was actually fairly easy if you just put some packing into the socket you can get it started when it is extended, but no go with the old one either. i think when i pulled the old one out it moved the chain at least a link off or so. still waiting to hear from the shop how bad it is. i tried starting it about a total of 6 times between the swap so i hope i did not hurt the valves.....

Have a look at this video, he uses the new style tensioner, and gives tips on hope to locate TDC and lining up the timing marks . I learned a few tips from this.
