Thanks all for answering my question about the slot engaging when you install the new part, going into the garage after lunch to change it out!

piked up the "revised" tensioner today from my local chevy(with the oil pressure slot). i'll be doing the job in a few days, myself, on my 2006 HHR..at the dealer, i spoke with one of the service guys who has done this job more than once.he said that the slot will "self-align" once oil pressure hits it....which i hope is right away upon starting the pup.......let us know how it turns out.........thanks.

Well, that was special ! first off for the terrified, if the old tensioner does come apart, I used a magnet to remove the spring and two other parts from the hole they lived in, nothing dropped into the engine, whew!! I looked at the Haynes book and ensured I had all the pieces shown in the exploded picture. the new part went right in, I torqued to the specified 55 ft/lbs and started the HHR no issues no more noise, ahhhh! success. there was a little bit of oil drip but not much. so have a paper towel or rag ready, I used my 32 mm socket, 24 inch Johnson bar, then torque wrench to set it at proper specs.

job done...piece of cake. hardest part was getting the original tensioner loose. any and all chain noise gone..torqued to 55 ft lbs......no leaks...all's good.

my '06 makes an odd "wheezing" sound (although I suspect it's mechanical and not vacuum based) at part throttle that goes away when I give it some boot .. I suspect it's timing chain tensioner ... will give a new one a shot to see if the noise goes away.

Very happy to see that it's less fussy than doing one on a 1998 VR6 GLi (engine removal makes it possible)

cheers

Steve
