Newbie-Modifying HHR Panel for TOAD and Stealth City Camping

With decent gas mileage and the ability to tow "four down" (either manual or automatic?), I'm thinking that a HHR panel van could work well as a toad. In addition, I wonder if anyone has converted one for "stealth camping", for those occasional times when you want to spend a week in a city, and sleep uninterrupted. It seems to me, that if one were to cut out a space for a fantastic fan in the roof , and leave windows cracked for ventilation, it might be comfortable in 85 degree summer weather. What I am uncertain about, is the cargo space? It seems like there is some kind of internal system for storage? Any comments?

Welcome to the site, you can make it into anything you want, if you know how. If not then Google is your best friend!

Welcome to the site.

If you went with a regular HHR with windows, this is what it would look like with the rear seats folded down.(I have a full length rubber mat in place)
In fact, my seats are always folded down. If there's a storage bin under there, I haven't seen it in a long time.

Thread necro!!! :o

There is storage under there, just behind the back seats, in addition to that above the spare tire.
I'm considering a mild re-work of Herman, as my company is facing a potential "Big Job", installing network hardware over 60 locations from the east coast to Colorado. We don't have a set method to cover travel expenses, so my employers are thinking about just paying a per-diem large enough to handle hotels and dining on the road. I'd have to drive, as it'd be WAY too inconvenient to fly commercially between cities with my tools. Most clusters of install locations are within a day's drive of each other.
So, I'm thinking of boondocking with my HHR as much as possible. I'd probably spend the weekends at hotels, but stay in the car during the week when I need to be mobile. As I spent 20 years as an over-the-road trucker, usually living in a sleeper smaller than the inside of my HHR, I don't think I'll have too much trouble adapting.

The job isn't a done deal, we're just working up the quote now, but it's kinda fun to plan, and I may even mod Herman a bit anyway. He's almost paid off, and we do tend to sleep in the front seats while traveling to NM (my folks) and NY (hers). It'd be nice to be able to stretch out and be comfortable.
