I thought it was a safe assumption. But, I've also heard blind people also have a heightened awareness with another sense or two, or is that an old wives tale?

I used to work with a blind guy who claimed to have a heightened sense of hearing, so how come I could sneak up on him all the time?

He also claimed to be afraid of the dark, probably why he turned out to be a comedy writer in Hollywood, don't you think?
