Bob got broken into!
Let's see..................
- doors were locked when I left the car
- hatch open
- items missing
- doors unlocked but not opened; alarm goes off when I open door
Either way, that's a raw deal. Sorry to hear, man.
I went with an aftermarket alarm with my Jetta when someone tried to steal it on me... and the factory alarm didn't even complain. Problem is that factory alarms have to be made to disarm with a key, so there's usually a fairly easy way to 'hotwire' them off... not usually without any obvious signs of damage though.
Aftermarket alarm is on the short list of things to put in my HHR... sorry to hear yours got broken in to... That feeling of being violated takes much longer to get over than the damage that was done or the stuff taken to get replaced...

Man that sucks. I had a Shelby Charger that was broken into, but with mine they drove a screwdriver through the door and popped the lock out to gain entry and stole my CD's, head unit, amp and subs, and trashed the interior in the process. As bad as things are, they could have been worse, and I'm glad no damage was done to Bob. If there was only a way to "charge" a car with high voltage so anyone who touches it gets zapped like a tazer.
I'd be going around to the different shops you took your car for all the different mods. Code grabbers are actually not as useful anymore because everyone's gone to a rolling-code scheme. Somebody could have easily copied your key or disabled the lock on the tailgate. Still doesn't explain the other unlocked doors and the fact that the alarm still went off in unlock mode.
I know it doesn't matter much to you now, but at least the car is still there and there's no damage other than the missing items. Could be a LOT worse. A friend of mine in high school had the rear hatch busted out of his '85 Firebird for a couple of Wal-Mart subs. $600 damage for maybe $60 worth of subs.
If you do get an aftermarket alarm, do not let them tie it into the ignition or remote start system. I've found through bad luck that PASS-Key does not like aftermarket interlocks or bypasses.
If any good comes out of this perhaps knowledge of these type of devices will come to our attention.
I guess it's silly of us to think with all the transmitted signals in our society that any thing with access through such is really safe.
I'm all for going back to keys if that what it takes.
Extra after market alarms are another approach but I'd rather keep them out with locked doors. Not that anything will keep folks out if they really want access.
Mike really sorry to hear of your misfortune but something don't seem quite right here. If your code was hawked or someone using a VFO device managed to unlock the doors then why did the alarm not go off when the hatch was opened as it did when you opened the door? I am confused on this but I definately hope everything works out to your advantage. Please keep us posted on this as I have the factory alarm in mine also..
The first mod I had done on the "Beautiful One" was a better alarm system, second was the CLUB, and then of course, Mrs. B/B takes HER ride into a bad neighborhood regularly, so I just keep my fingers crossed.
So far, all that I`ve lost are the portholes.

Glad they didn't F Bob up (other than the stolen stuff)
With all the electronic devices on the market now days, some low life probably "hawked" your code. Saw in Autozone the other day a device that could search transmitter codes.
