Now it appears that GM and Mobil have gotten together to develop and approve 0W-40 Mobil1 oil, Dexos2 compliant to be used in the new Corvettes which previously in North America were supplied and recommended with Mobil1 5W-30 as are the HHR.
It further states that any Corvette that required Dexos approved oil are recommended to switch to the new 0W-40. Don't know of the relation, but 2 of the 3 upcoming engines this comming year are DOHC VVT engines.
As an aside, I don't know why these ECO engines start to loose timing chains at around 110k, but my Ford p/u also has a DOHC VVT engine with now 250k on it untouched and runs quiet as can be.
It has had Mobil1 0W-40 in it since day 1. Doubt if the difference is just in the oil.

But what does this have to do with the HHR 4 cyl. and it's Ecotec family of engines ? The big V8 in the Corvette is a totally different engine family.

Did GM issue a TSB recommending a retroactive weight change, like they did with Dexron VI and Dexos. What weight oil did they formerly recommend for the huge V8s.
That they developed a formulation for a certain weight doesn't imply a weight recommendation change.
