The only giant monster I got into is the king of all monsters Godzilla! I think I remember seeing Them. Was it one of those 50's goofball MST3K type films?

They might have run it but it is actually well done with very good special effects for the period. It had James Whitmore and James Arness(trivia, was the Thing in the original The Thing)

I remember The Beast from 20K Fathoms because had it Ray Harryhausen special effects. I love his stop motion! I'm not really into sword and sandal films but all of the ones he was involved in rocked! None of his works can top Clash Of The Titans though. I LOVE that film!

Maybe I was wrong about Them. I remember seeing a giant ant film when I was younger but I remember it was kind of goofball and cheesy. I am bad when it comes to the classics unless they are really bad like the aforementioned Eegah!, really well known, or someone I like was involved.

If you were to watch Them and other monster movies from the era you would see they didn`t do the standard "real bug/lizard" etc filmed up close for their monsters. They actually made animatronic giant ants for the actors to apear with. I came across another "giant" movie while on Amazon, The Begining of the End with Peter Graves. This one was filmed with the aformentioned real bugs on miniature sets/photos to apear giant. While I enjoyed this movie especially because the finale was taking place in Chicago, the quality of effects can be seen. This all has to be taken with a grain of salt as we can`t judge these movies by todays cgi effect standards.

It had to be a different film then because I remember the ants being blue screen. It was one of those films that used to play on USA's Up All Night. Maybe I should lay off the sleaze and exploitation for a while and examine the classics. I noticed the directors back then relied a lot on atmosphere and payed a lot of attention to the lighting/shadows.

I HATE CGI! It's cool if the film is an entire CGI film like Finding Nemo or it's used to enhance animation but I can't stand it in films! I can tolerate if it's used to enhance certain traditional effects like in Land of the Dead or the begging suicide scene in Ken Park but I hate when they go overboard like the recent trend of Marvel films. When I was a kid I was obsessed with special effects and make-up. I would read and study everything I could by the greats like Dick Smith and Tom Savini.
