Not a VW front end...... but obviously a glass body.

 

I have owned nearly every iteration of air cooled VW, and that is definitely not a VW front end. It's not a beam axle, nor is it the MacPherson strut from the Super, which came out in 71 and I think would be too new for this car anyway.

 

The hints are:

1) Its a British car
2) It has original Ford wheels
3) Not well made (not much of a hint, could be anything British)
4) Not many where made

My guess its some version of the Austin-Healey 100
