OMG! Reccomend me a new dog.
Here's a list of the dogs NOT to get:
Jack Russell-way too hyper
Shetland Sheepdog-see above
Border Collie-my dad's dog wanted to herd passing cars!
I have always had mutts and have loved every one of them. They are usually smaller than a full bred dog and don't have the problems developed by overbreeding. But, if I had to pick one breed I truly love, it's a Boxer. My sister has had many of them and her latest is smaller in stature and great to be around. She looks so funny when she tries to sleep in a bed bought for the smaller dogs in the family. Also, she gets along with the other dogs quite well.

Go for a terrier mix 25-40 lbs. We have a beagle/terrier mix and a manchester terrier/? mix that are very smart and fun (energetic) dogs. Any Beagle or Beagle mix will howl and bark though. The Manchester is very quiet except when necessary. They respond well to an "invisible fence". Forgive the embarassing neckerchiefs, they were temporary. Both Shelter dogs, and the Manchester lived on her own on the streets of L.A. for about a year, so you know she is smart! Smaller dogs live way longer too.

OK, let's stop the Jack Russell-bashing!
I have two and love 'em! Wouldn't trade them for anything. Smart, fun, full of energy and highly trainable. The first year is rough, yes. They'll chew you out of house and home. But my two girls (an Irish Jack, or Puddin', and a standard Jack with short hair) mean the world to me. Here's Priscilla ... and Gracie ...

I love JRT's. Highly trainable and very smart. Energetic, yes...they need lots of space to run, but you'll never have rodent problems....
Also, if you have small kids, that's the best way to exhaust them.... put them in the yard with the dog and let 'em go at it!

A retired racing greyhound makes a great pet. Forget what you might have heard about hyper, always running, etc. They're just a great family dog. They are indoor dogs due to their low body fat and thin coat. Go to the Savannah Grey link on my siggy line and you can see my first RRG-Racey (hence the name Raceysdad, haha). We have several links off our site so you can do your own research. There are adoption facilities all over the US! Let one race into your heart, you'll never regret it.

Here you go.....lol

On a more serious note.......here is the latest addition to our family. She should be a "small" monster when she gets older. Her dad was 150 lbs. and mom was around 125 lbs...
