When my dog trainer heard that my pup was boxer/chow, she told me, "Your dog will need to be socialized; she must come into contact with at least 50 people before she is 6 months old." It's true that she has a different nature than her bonkers "sister" but I actually think it's due to her being smarter, not more dangerous. It takes her about 3 good visits before she wants to roll around and lick your hand...It's gonna take me a whole lot longer!

Do I believe there's such a thing as a born bad dog? Probably...
But a whole bad breed? Man, that's doubtful.
I agree with the trainer to a point, ALL Dogs should be well socialized. I have trained two of my own Service Dogs, and a Therapy Dog and helped train a few Service dogs at a facility that provides them. If you read anything on this, the dogs are taken into every situation that you can imagine, meet other animals, insects, reptiles, all forms of people (young, adult, in uniform, oout of uniform etc) If more and more people would only study the breed they want, research and buy videos, books and such on training, these dogs will be better off as well as the owner. The owner may think the want or need a rottie, pit, gsd or whatever, but show see if they can handle the responsibility that comes with the breed.

Some of the shots are graphic and some of the music sucks but they do a good job getting the main point across about the pitbull. I have to admit to a tear or two coming to my eyes while watching the heroic actions of some of the pits shown and at the though of the losing such an incredible breed of dogs due to ignorance. How could anyone want to ban or destroy such a beautiful animal?

Just checked out a few of the videos you posted, brings tears of sadness and joy.

actually, thats not quite true. In studies of bite pressure, these are the results

Humans: 120 pounds of bite pressure

Domestic dogs: 320 LBS of pressure on avg. A German Shepard, American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) and Rottweiler were tested using a bite sleeve equipped with a specialized computer instrument. The APBT had the least amount of pressure of the 3 dogs tested.

Wild dogs: 310 lbs

Lions: 600 lbs

White sharks: 600 lbs

Hyenas: 1000 lbs

Snapping turtles: 1000 lbs

Crocodiles: 2500 lbs

Pit bulls also do not have a locking jaw, no dogs do.

the other problem comes into play is that there are at least 25 breeds that people tend to call "pit bull" while the only real one is the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Here is a fun test. http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html pick the pit bull in the line-up. Once you find the pit, you'll see his head shape is signifcantly smaller than many of the other breeds on the page.

as for the only dog that can snap bone. quoted from a law site.

Many large dogs have the capability of bone snapping jaw pressures of 200 to 450 pounds per square inch.

I have a friend that "HAD" a Staffordshire Terrier that she had raised since it was 6 weeks old. She lived in Las Vegas and moved back to Ohio. The dog had been to school and was a gentle and loving dog. When she bought her house in Ohio and went to insure it... the insurance company would not insure her house because of the dog. No insurance company that she contacted would. Insurance companies have a list of dogs that they feel are risks and will not insure your property if you have one. She debated long and hard what to do with the dog, and her final decision was to have the dog put down. She said she couldn't let someone else take the dog and possibly mistreat it. She felt it would be unfair to the dog to do that to it. I have tried to put myself in her place and wonder what I would have done.
I believe that breeding, training, and how a dog is treated makes up the dogs temperament. I have owned Dobbies, German Shepherds. No problems with any.... Should a breed be banned...No..... People need to research a breed before they obtain a dog, and be willing to take the time to train and socialize that dog.
Would I own A Pit... no, not for me..... I am OWNED by an Australian Shepherd!

I found it the first time but I had to stare at them for a little while. Some of them obviously aren't pits like the Swiss mountain dog but a few of the bulldogs can kind of throw you for a loop.

WOW looks like someone has brought up a touchy subject!
I have to admit I skipped 3 or 4 pages of this thread, but I must say I have owned 4 pits, 2 American and 2 staffies. ALL were rescued from the animal shelter by me and my wife, not from rescue agencies. I had 2 males and 2 females and they were the best dogs I've had, without any training. It took awhile for me to trust them with my children, but that’s the same with people. I brought home a new baby girl and from day one the pits were interested in her and over time they became good playmates, she would even use the dogs as a step to get up on the cough when she was just a few months (6-7-8 or so)old. These were "pits" that were scheduled to be put to sleep, simply because of there name and the bad rap that goes along with it. It is solely the responsibility of the owners to ensure the breed stays friendly, a dog is similar to a child and needs to be watched and nurtured to be raised correctly. I almost agree with who ever it was that said that they should be registered as deadly weapons but that would only give them a worse rap. Owners should have to get a background check before being able to own one, just like a gun, along with dobies, rotts, and golden retrievers, which by the way at one time, not too long ago, were responsible for the most bites to humans than any other breed. So will these dogs be banned as well?
I now only have a small whippet and a damn Chihuahua, do to the fact that I moved into an apartment, and we spent a long time finding RESPONSIBLE, KNOWLEDGEABLE, pet owners who we could trust to LOVE these dogs and not allow there name to become their demise.

Maybe this thread should be locked or closed or whatever is done so a topic like this mixed with strong emotions doesn't go bad.

LONG LIVE THE HHR

There are indeed bad breeds, bad dogs, bad owners, etc. How do stiffer penalties protect those alreday injured. Locally a mail man was brutally attacked by a pit bull. My nephew raises them. He used great care and love and was maulled by his own dog. He has just one left. These dogs came from the same blood line even litter and there are tremedous differences. In stead/in addition to penalties the owners should be forced to to keep them on their property through the use of apropiate fencing. Swimming pools must be fenced, why not dangerous dogs.
By the way Dalmations are overly agressive and should be put down once they taste blood.
