I remember when the SAAB made it's first appearance here back around 1958/59. The little hole-in-wall dealer that I had just bought a 1957 Renault Dauphine from switched to SAABs, just like that! They sure were butt ugly cars back then, and that 3 cyl. 2-cycle engine had a weird sound. SAAB has come a long way since then!!

I heard about the old SAAB 2-cycle engines being really loud.I also heard they got 40 mpg with them. It's funny that we get excited about 30 mpg in our "modern" cars now.

Yep, Car nut. Current ride is a 1977 Pontiac Bonneville, w/ a 400 Big Block. I'm working on restoring it. I've also got a 1993 Suzuki Swift 1.3 SOHC Hatchback. It's not much, But it moves... BTW, It's an Identical Twin Sister to a Geo Metro.

You're probably right about the gas mileage for the SAAB. I used to run the Renault between Albany and Massapequa, L.I. quite a bit back then. I would usually average 42/45 mpg. But it only had about a 38 hp engine good for maybe 70 mph tops. This was pre-Interstates then, and the speed limits were probably 50/55 anyway. The SAAB probably was in about the same category, but a much better car than the Renault qualitywise as it turned out.

Alz, Renault's have never been good cars. The only good Renault is a minivan in europe called the Espace. The Best of the PeopleCarriers. But then, That's like saying, "OH GOOD! I'VE GOT SYPHILIS! THE BEST OF THE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES!"

I don't even know the quality of Renaults even now! I guess they like them in France. They finally just gave up on the American market. Funny thing was, I sold the Renault to a friend and bought another French car, a 1960 Simca Aronde Hardtop. That turned out to be another piece of c--p!! Spent as much time in the shop as it did on the road!! Was a pretty little car though!

I am a certifiable car nut. How do I know? I have tried to get an in to purchase three classic vehicles I have seen on roadsides ... and only one of them is even made by a manufacturer that's still around. The cars, in order of when I tried to get them:

'59 Cadillac Series 63 Executive Car
'48 Packard
'49 Frazer

How much crazier am I now? When (if) I retire, I want to rent a flatbed, go to Arizona, and pick up salvage cars on roadsides.
