to the forum alexrckid!

And yes its a timing chain, shouldn't require service for the life of the vehicle according to GM.

Actually, DUAL chains!

Sounds racy, huh?

Both are driven off the crank. The "rear" chain drives both balance shafts and the water pump. The "front" drives both cams.

Chains last longer than belts, however, tensioners tend to wear out in some cases.

Anybody know when and if the tensioners need to be replaced? I got 177k on my 06. A buddy keeps telling my i should replace the guides. Any idea?

Well at 177k, I'd replace them if you're opening up the engine, or if the chain is noisy...and at that point changing the tensioner is a good idea along with a fresh chain.

There isn't a set service interval on the chain, some are still going strong at well over 300k, and others have pooped out as soon as 125k. Its all down to maintenance, the engines that seem to come up short have been run for extended mileages between oil changes.
