I finally found the info in the GM service manual. The rubber bushed pin is installed into the top position for all HHR's !!!
Many thanks to all for your input and advice.
By the way... Since doing my brakes, the pedal hasn't felt this good since it had 5,000 miles on it. New rotors, pads, pins, and new stainless pad pieces for the front, and the rears received an adjustment - that was it.

I have searched and searched with no real success to this agonizing question:
Which front brake caliper slide pin goes to the top and bottom? They are interchangeable. One has a small rubber bushing on the end, the other does not. I have found answers on other makes of cars, but it does no good to me if their caliper is on the rearward side of the knuckle vs. the forward side.
My '07 HHR has the calipers on the front side of the knuckle, while other make/models are on the rear side, so just saying the rubber bushed pin goes on top is not logical.
I am pretty sure I put mine in the way they came out, but after a friend posed this question to me, I am going crazy to find out the truth.
Also, what is wrong with the over the counter grease for lubing the pins? Is it really neccessary to by the OEM lube from the dealer?
Can anyone help here?

He must mean the brake caliper bracket, the pins or sliders are inserted into them, therefore the pin with the bushing will be installed into the bracket hole on the leading end of the brake pad or in the case of the HHR the top hole on either side.

Yes the bracket. I was told many years ago its called the shoe.
Sorry i know i should put bracket. My last car everyone called that piece the shoe. So much so that i say it when i should have used the correct term.sorry about that and yes from what i seen the top has L engraved on stock parts on driver side. And the bushing goes on top. Dove deeper
