changing oil filter question

For those that have changed their own oil, when installing a new oil filter is it suppose to spin or be locked in place once its pushed into the cap?

I have done several oil changes and sometimes when installing the new oil filter it would still spin or rotate once in place while sometimes its stationary or solid and wont spin or rotate.

Some filters designs fit differently than others on the cap end.

I just plop the new filter into the hole then screw the cap on, usually with a new O-ring.

Don't over think the easy stuff.

I never known the filter to spin. I've used AC Delco and Fram filters only, and so I don't know about the other brands.
But then again like Don , I just put the new o ring and filter on the cap, drop it in the hole thread it down and tighten with my 32 mm shallow socket 1/8 turn.
My next oil change I'll have to investigate.

I attached the filter to the cap and then spun the cap back on. 9 years and 117K miles and I never had to replace the gasket and it never leaked.
