Oil info

Researching what Donbrew, OldBlue and others have given I noted somethings that GM has stated regarding dexos 1. In the GM list of licensed brands, they note that their GM brand of AC Delco oil is a Synthetic Blend and not a FULL Synthetic oil. They state that the dexos 1 label is given to the Viscosity’s of ONLY SAE: 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30. I did not see a 10W-30 viscosity listed for any brand! Please note in their listing of approved brands on their site dexos1 Brands | GM dexos? Licensing Program that the brands are listed by viscosity so keep looking for that rating and keep going down the list for the brand name and viscosity you need.

In their (GM) statements found in file:///C:/Users/NELIB-GA011/Documents/DownloadPdf.pdf it states that not going by the GM Oil Life System, which is greater than 3,000 mile oil changes, we are wasting product/oil. They want extended oil changes over the old school of every 3,000 miles. I have talked to the Mobil 1 people before and I asked about their Extended oil of 15,000 miles or about one-year’s use. I asked them what was the different from their regular Mobil 1 and they said the Extended oil had additives for seal leakage. They said that the regular Mobil 1 oil would go 15,000 miles or about one year also. I’m sure that when Mobil 1 first came out that it was said to be a one-year oil change product. The problem then was that it leaked due to the type of gaskets and seals that were being used.

This write up also tells about the International Standard of GF-5 which calls for meeting higher tests and requirements. GM feels that dexos 1 will be able to meet these new higher standards and test.

Please note that I would not recommend using dexos 2 in any HHR as it is rated for light diesel engines ONLY. Being so it has different requirements than a gas engine. If it could be proven this could void a factory warranty I would think, just not a smart thing to try. After all its two different types of engine.

Nobody uses 10w-30 anymore. I had a guy preach something about 10w-x was an entirely different type of oil to me, I don't know.

The oil conservation and disposal is part of the ECO in ecotech.

I think that I saw GF-5 is already on dexos cans, my eyes may have lied to me, again.

My memory is that Mobil1 first came out as a permanent oil, until the marketing department figured out that meant no repeat sales. But that was when 50,000 miles on a car was exceptional.

Pep Boys says all theirs is Dexos marked. Glad I thought to get mine changed yesterday. Although the salesman said they had changed it recently, the evidence was otherwise. Not terribly surprised.

I need a pair of glasses, there are more dexos labeled containers than I first thought, just had to look closer. i was always looking for a round seal on the container, that apparently has changed. My bad, or my bad eyesight I should say. lol

500 miles on the oil change and the oil change reminder is at 90% so 5000 intervals is what mine reads. I will probably change it at the 25% remaining interval.

I'm with you. I just watch for 30%, and then get on it. It's usually high 20s by the time I do it. I've had multiple GM vehicles - used to work there - and that strategy never failed me.

I would expect the interval to be 4-7K, depending on your city driving. Cold weather also factors in; if you drive short distances in it, it ups your wear, reducing your interval.

All's I knows is: a 2008 LT 2.2L and a 2011 LT 2.2L both got about 12,000 for me. I would be driving about 200-500 miles a day mixed high speed, city, highway stop & go, and hours idling with the A/C on. Using full syn.

Maybe it was my high mileage a day, very few short hops.

donbrew I am right about 150 miles to 200 miles a day with no idling aside from the occasional stop light or traffic and if I followed my OLM I would be at about 12K too. These guys must have short commutes! or a heavy foot!

I am at 4100 miles on this oil change and according to the dic I have 56% oil life left. I have about 50 50 highway trips and local short trips and city driving. I will change it about 7000 mi. regardless. It looks I would roll about 10K more than I have ever drove any vehicles oil without a change, I won't start now.

I am not smarter than the engineers at Opel. I will go by their guidelines and save my money and the environment.
