Having just picked up our HHR last week, it has 160K on it and the oil was changed before it was purchased. For my next oil change, I'd like to switch to synthetic. I'm thinking this would not be an issue at this point but wanted to make sure with you guys since you're all so knowledgeable and stuff :)

If you do, keep a real close eye on the oil level. I changed over to synthetic at high mileage, and it gobbled a quart of it real fast, and I had to add more way before the next oil change. Previously it hardly used a drop between changes. I've returned back to regular oil, and consumption has returned back to normal.

I have used synthetic for years. I have not seen any oil consumption but I will have to watch closer as miles get higher. I do has a 95 suburban 454 with 208000 miles It uses a quart or two between oil changes I have never thought about changing back to regular oil.

Lucky......

454 engines are known to use oil between changes. In fact it was an in house joke between GM technicians that GM's oil consumption guideline was created by the 454 engine team.

I used about a quart between synthetic oil changes of between 4000-5000 miles in my 454 truck. which was not run hard and only accelerated heavily on freeway entrance ramps.

So, depending on your oil change mileage, your consumption rate is normal.

I change my oil once a year, with Mobil 1. I only put around 5500 miles on my car a year.
