So far I haven't had any uneven wear issues with mine.

 

Cleaning them every oil change or rotate is a little over kill and will still not address a seal on the piston that may not be retracting the piston all the way.

This kind thing happens and often it does not kill off to many miles. It is just a case where you have to look at both pads when you check your brakes.

The bottom line here is do not blame the rotors as this is not where the issue is. It is in the caliper and how it is floating. May be pins may be seal. But everyone likes to blame rotors for so many brake issues and completely overlook the real cause.

Remember the caliper piston pushes the inside pad out it contacts and pulls the outside pad into the rotor. The inside can get more wear but if the caliper does not retract it will drag the inside pad.

The other thing that can happen is if the hub is out a little it can wobble and hit the pad and not only wear it but also wear the rotor unevenly. Again not a rotor issue but in this case a hub.

Too many people think that brakes are just slap on pads and rotors and go when there is more thing to consider that could be checked or should be checked if things are not wearing correctly. Brake systems are more complex all the time and there are many new factors today that were not issues in the past.

Generally most brake jobs do not require much but there are times they demand more attention and more than just the basics. Even good mechanics miss or just do not do all that they should do at times due to lazy or not just keeping up.

clean and inspect and rotate isn't overkill, it will lead to the truth, for if we don't look for it, it will sneak up and bite you. Other than that I agree with you hyperv6 and Donbrew

 

I inspect my front brakes every 3000 miles when I rotate.

 

That is all you really need to do. Check the rotor surface and the pad thickness and go on.

If you detect issues then take care of it.

 

If you have the brembos and winters get messy, should check caliper movement, banjos, and lube them yearly. They need more attention.
