I'm going to agree with you (surprised)....oil is cheaper than an engine

But, do as you wish...(ho hum) whatever makes YOU comfortable.

 

Snoopy, I am trying to find out for sure who makes the oil that GM sells as Goodwrench and that is probably the factory fill oil in the ecotec engine. Is it Exxon-Mobil? Would Goodwrench GF4 5W-30 be the same thing as Mobil Clean 5000 5W-30 or do you think it would be Mobil Clean 7500 5W-30 since they would want the factory fill to go the mileage from the DIC oil life monitor which can be as long as 7500 miles before it (DIC) says to change oil?

can't tell you for absolute, positive, cross your fingers....but for a good number of years Mobil had been supplying the Goodwrench stuff. 12-15 years ago Texaco had the contract. It may have changed, but I don't believe so. One of the "big guys" from Mobil was on the Board of Directors at GM......you know, you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

As far as the type, I can't tell you. But generally the factory fill is what GM would supply (through the Parts group) to the dealers in cases or bulk.

GF4 Motor Oil
Identifiable by its distinctive "Starburst" symbol, GF4 Motor Oil has a longer life and contributes to increased fuel efficiency, increased emissions system protection* and reduced oil consumption. Fewer oil and oil filter changes save you time and money. Using (and disposing of) less petrochemicals means a reduced impact on the environment. Whether your vehicle has GF4 Motor Oil or not, Goodwrench Service technicians only change your oil when it's required.

On another car site I belong to it had been mentioned that Mobil still provides the oil in the US for the dealerships that sign up for GMs Goodwrench oil program (or whatever it's called), but apparently it's not mandatory to sign up on that program.

In Canada, Petro-Canada has the GM dealership oil contract.

Basically, as long as the oil is API SM/ILSAC GF4 rated and meets (or exceeds) the GM 6094M spec, you're good.

 

I agree with changing oil at 3000 miles !!!!! I want redrider to last !!!!

 

If you think about it GM stands to lose a LOT of money by putting instructions to follow the DIC in the owner's manual. Having the oil change guidelines in the manual like they do holds them legally responsible for any engine problems caused by following their instructions. I really really doubt they would have done that if they were not certain.
