"GM oil" is made by Mobil. But not all dealers buy their oil through GM. They use all different manufacturers. Mine happens to buy through GM. Now Dexos oil is GM but I'm not sure who actually refines and sells it to GM.

It seems that Dexos oil is made for GM by several outfits, they granted manufacturing licenses to Exxon-Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Old World Lubricants(Peak), Cross Oil Refining and Marketing, and SK Lubricants.

Probably who made what, depends on the region of the country.

Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic here... I got about a year out of my last oil change, still had 25% life left according to the DIC. I don't put on a lot of miles though and most is country roads and highway. Very little city/stop and go stuff.

I drive about 4000 miles per year, and change Mobil 1 at least every 6 months or sooner, my miles are almost around town stop and go, I dont want any engine problems so oil is CHEAP.

I was going to change oil in the fall of last year but I was still reading 75% or some such and the oil looked great... First year with the synthetic it didn't last as long for some reason. (same brand)

I use Mobile 1 in everything and it is has been Dexos rated from the start.

The fact is Dexos is a trade marked formula rating from GM. Nearly all major brands will offer licensed by GM to use the Dexos rating on their oils.

Here is the offical low down on Dexos

http://www.gmdexos.com/aboutdexos.html

Note GM and the other MFG Ford and Chrysler etc are working to force oil companies to make oils to their level of requirements and doing these ratings will force the oil companys hands to taylor the oils to the needs of future engines the mfg will build. Also note GM makes money with each license that brings some income but for the most it will cover the legal fees involved and some profit.

Oils are now for more than protecting bearings and rings. Some control VVT on the some engines and even on the Eco Turbo the oi sprayers cool the piston done. With new technologies the oil will be called on for many more things and with more Turbo engines the need for better oils will increase.

Here are the approved brands with the Dexos ratings as of now. Note there is now a Dexos 2 but it is for Diesels. I am sure we will see 3-4-5 etc in the future.

Look the label and it will have an Dexos approve stamp if it is accepted.

I use Mobil 1 or Quakerstate full synthetic 10w-30w with a NAPA Gold filter. I wouldn't use 5w anything in any engine that belongs to me. I change my oil/filter at 5000-6000 miles nomatter what the computer says
