GM says "DEXOS is DEXOS". They have an entire lab set up to make sure that any product with the DEXOS label on it, and a license number is the same as any other with the same label and a license number.

One of the things that the DEXOS spec does is replace the API specs. They may still be there, but not all oils with identical API codes are DEXOS.
Don I read your post and I know what you were saying, All good info....You and I are on the same page :)

GM vehicles that require a full synthetic still have oil fill caps labeled "Mobil 1".
Mike......

This is not necessarily true for the newer GM vehicles. They omit the Mobil 1 recommendation and state something like, "Use dexos full synthetic oil". At least on the last 3 vehicles that I checked that recommended/required for full synthetic (2 Vettes and a Camaro), said that.

Thanks for the heads up Snoopy, it's been two or three model years since I looked under the hood of a "Vette or SS Camaro, good to know.

Maybe GM has cut some ties with Mobil.

Regardless, that's all I use, why change after 30+ years.

No different then Harley trying to say you HAvE to use their inferior oils because they own the name and the licensing rights...forcing you to buy their oil is a money advantage until the competition catches up...which at that time big bank has already happened.

In short, any dexos approved oil that is full synthetic will be ok in any GM car. While the synthetic blend, dexos approved oils are not recommended/required for those vehicles specifically calling for FULL synthetic.

I believe Mike mentioned this in post #6 of this thread.
Oh please just recommending to use the oil listed off the official list can lead to confusion.

I would not be surprised that most all cars will be full synthetic before long from the factory. They have already made changes to the grade in the new LT truck engines to a 0-w30 If I read correctly, The next step may just be a full syn. I think they would be there now if not for scaring people who do not understand the cost.

This is probably very true. If changing your own oil the difference is not bad usually around $10 more but can be had for as little as $5 more then dino. But have a shop do it for you, you were probably used to $15-$20 per oil change. Using full syn and you are usually looking at $20-$30 more to use full syn at the same shop.

Yeah, but whats the real difference between Dexos and regular syn oil? Anybody know? Its not about going syn..its about having to use a specific type of syn oil. Starting to get like the trans oils back in a day.But at least that was all about what seals were used in the trans, not about who owned the licensing rights.

I was thinking Hyper was just meaning in general in the automotive world. Not GM 2011 and up specific. Were you being specific Hyper?
