Those nuts are hell. FWIW, the free bolts do have a tiny torx hole on the top to hold them while tightening the nut with a crescent thru the holes on the side. Did not work for me, but they are there.
Those wires are not only for the light, they are also the interlock. If you leave them unconnected you will not be able to remove the key or shut the engine off/on. That's the connector that comes from the main harness (the one that's too short), the other is for the light but comes from the main one.

Finished my shifter install a short while ago. Not too bad. the hard part was the small electrical connector at the back of the shifter. Used a dental pick to pull up the tab to disconnect and the same one as a hook to plug back in. Looks alot nicer.
The bolts werent a huge issue. I used small gauge copper wrapped around the bolts while the shifter was out to keep the bolts from falling back through. If I had some of the push/locking washers I would have used those.
