I have a regular HHR with no back seat. replaced them with storage panels now have a flat area behind the seats. Even more than a panel unit. :-)

I don't understand how and it would only be by a few inches

In the panel there are two small storage areas where the rear seats were. When I removed the seats I replaced it with a full width box that almost touches the front seats. I can store items that are long and go across the width of the car which you can't. Pulse being rectangle is much larger. I store camera tripods and all kinds of things there. The top comes off so have full access to it. I will take some photos and post here.

Did you know that the rear seat backs fold down to extend the cargo floor? Then you have both seats and cargo, just no large storage boxes.

Rear Seat Space

Yes but you still loose all the space the folded down seats take which is a lot.

I think we might be talking apples and oranges here. He said "replaced it with a full width box that almost touches the front seats" - so I believe he is talking about a custom box of some sort and not any HHR stock parts.
If he posted a picture it sure would be nice, cause this discussion sure isn't going anywhere quickly.

When I folded my seats down (all of the time) they almost touched the front seats and I had to remove the headrests. The only difference I see is on the sides for the wheel well cut outs.

I think I still have the headrests in the garage.
