I would not panic. Out of near 10,000 SS there have been a few issues for a couple people. The Majority have had no issues and more than not what has happened will not happen again unless they were owner induced some way.

Be sure to drop in randomly and request to see the progress. It sounds like a dick thing to do, but if they know you're super concerned that she is rebuilt right, they will make a better effort at proper assembly. It would SUCK to have something go wrong internally, all because a tech missed ONE thing or torqued something funny.

Those MAF errors you were getting could have pointed to what caused your car to eat its piston-should it go lean.

Wonder why they're doing a teardown instead of a new short block. You'd think GM would want it back for DCA. I would ask if they just honing or boring the walls. Gotta wonder if the cracked piston caused any scoring.

Update Blown SS

Well I got my SS back a week ago. Its running great. It was covered under the powertrain warranty. I've owned 5 chevy's never used the 5/100,000 warranty.
Been taking it easy to break in motor. Total cost not including 3 wks rental car is $4900.00. I'm going on vacation in 2 weeks to NC from Md that will be the test. Just ordered black wheels to go with black ss. All mods will be exterior from now on. No more performance upgrades for me.

pour the coal to it. high cyl pressure seats rings. if all they did was re-ring it, then the motor is already broken in. u just need to seat the rings.

Gee , Thanks bart.

I have just the GM perf. upgrade with no tune trying the 10 or so dif. intake configs. i've played with. (Scan gauges help)

But i've nailed it down to 1 to do with the tune. Motor purrs like a well trained kitten.

See ya sat.

If the mechanic that worked on it, is good, you should be fine. I have a Ford product (V8) that had head problems when it was still under the extended warranty. They had to pull both heads etc, and that was probably eight or nine years ago. Its still running great.
