Question 2006 HHR Ignition Lock

Vehicle turns on/off no problem. However, I cannot get the key out until I reach inside a hole under the steering wheel and feel for a little lever. I manipulate the lever with one hand and I can remove the key with the other hand. I have noticed recalls on other HHR's regarding ignition switch problems, and also on the Cobalt. Any one know what I could do? There have been no stated recalls for my vehicle in this matter, as far as I can tell.

If you would like I can check once again to see if any recalls have shown up for your vehicle. If so just private message me your name, address, vehicle identification number, and current mileage. Also have you taken it to your local dealership to have them diagnose the issue?

Thank you,

HHr ignition switch

Sorry, I didn't realize I had a reply to my query. I have taken it in to a local Chevrolet dealer. I explained to problem, they told me it was something in the transmission, which I find hard to believe, as I am able to manually (inside the steering column) locate the lever to trip in order to remove the key. They quoted me a cost of over $300.00 to fix. Seems a bit much for something I can easily remedy with a bit of ingenuity. I appreciate your response, and look forward to your help in this matter. Thank you.

Actually, it is the transmission SHIFTER that is the problem. The interlock switch specifically, you may be able to take it apart and spray some WD40 or the like on it. The "official" repair is to replace the entire shifter.
