Auto-Lock non-functional, Shifter Solenoid Noise on Braking
First Post!
Anyhow, I have had my '06 HHR (2.2L, LS, Auto) since 12/06 and now have 121k+ on it. Just had a problem yesterday morning with hard shifting while on the highway (started there) while on my way to work. I also noticed then that whenever I applied the brakes, the shifter unlock solenoid (the one that actuates to let the shifter out of park) actuates. Also, my auto-unlock on park and auto-lock on anything other than park on my doors has stopped working. However, yesterday afternoon, and today, my car is no longer shifter hard, but, the other problems still exist. My cruise-control still works just fine, and I have no remote start.
Any ideas? If need be, I can disconnect the battery to try and kill any lurking codes. Nothing has caused a check engine light, but I suppose there could be a stored code on the controller.

Sounds like the ECM doesn't know that the vehicle is in drive. [shifter switch clicks when the brake is depressed when it should only do that in park]
It also doesn't know when it's in park to unlock the doors but it apparently starts so the safety switch works. Sounds like transmission switch, body control module or wiring connecting them.

I'm having a similar issue...but there's more. I can't afford to go to the dealer again. My HHR is a real lemon. It's had close to 4000 (not 400, 4 thousand) dollars worth of work done on it between the warranty and my pocket.
I have a 2006 2LT w/ 2.4 and auto.
Currently, I can't put it in park, or I have to disconnect the battery to get it back out of park. I put it in neutral and set the parking brake, then use the release button under the steering column to remove the key. That's been for several months.
The doors lock/unlock themselves while I'm driving down the road, sitting still, etc, anytime the key is on, the ghost may lock or unlock the car for me.
Or the headlights may turn on, dimming everything inside...on a bright sunny day...when this happens I know the car is really gonna give me a hard time.
When the ghost is around, the transmission won't shift past 2nd gear, unless I get to 50 or better, then it disengages for 2-5 seconds before shifting to 3rd.
Or I'm going down the highway 70-85 MPH, and the transmission decides to jump from 4 to 2 or 3, causing the RPM to surge (and in my mind, straining the transmission and engine)
This is NOT a transmission issue. Turning the car off and back on fixes it, so it's electronic, but I'm not sure where to look or what to replace.
It's had 2 "computers" not sure which they replaced, hundreds, if not a thousand dollars worth of sensors
2 shifter assemblies
Sunroof problems 2X
I can't think of the other 10 or 15 things thats been replaced.
I LOVE my HHR, but it's been just awful to me.
