Clock Spring

I got a call last night from a buddy who replaced his steering wheel, but did not take care to make sure the clock spring did not come unwound. He attempted to rewind it; but apparently did not do it correctly and broke the ribbon cables.

He has a 2008 HHR 1LT

I have helped him search Ebay for a clock spring there, but nothing for the HHR.

I have found several local for the the Cobalt, 2007 and 2008.

1. Will the cobalt clock spring work?

If not, anyone have a part number for it? Searched gm parts direct, but it did not give a part number.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are referring to the SIR coil, yes they are the same.

Here are the instructions you'll need. I am assuming you have done steps 1-5 already. This repair is not easy and damage to the coil could happen again. The main thing is to make sure you disable the SIR system make sure the coil is aligned. I don't recommend this repair to someone attempting it for the first time.

Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement Removal Procedure
Notice: The new SIR coil assembly will be centered. Improper alignment of the SIR coil assembly may damage the unit, causing an inflatable restraint malfunction.

1.Place the front wheels in the straight forward position with the steering wheel centered.
2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
4. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
5. Remove the steering column covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .

6. Disconnect the SIR coil harness connector from the SIR coil module assembly.
7. Disconnect the headlamp/turn signal harness connector from the SIR coil module assembly.
8. Disconnect the wiper/washer harness connector for the SIR coil module assembly.

9. Using a small flat-bladed tool, carefully pry the 2 retaining tabs away at the base of the SIR coil assembly and slide the SIR coil assembly off of the steering column.

10. Remove the headlamp/turn signal switch from the SIR coil module assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
11. Remove the wiper washer switch from the SIR coil module assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement .

Installation Procedure
1. Install the wiper washer switch from the SIR coil module assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement .
2. Install the headlamp/turn signal switch to the SIR coil module assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
3. Install the headlamp/turn signal switch screws.
4. Verify the SIR coil is in the center position. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering .
5. Slide the SIR coil assembly on the steering column and snap into place.

6. Connect the wiper/washer harness connector to the SIR coil module assembly.
7. Connect the headlamp/turn signal harness connector to the SIR coil module assembly.
8. Connect the SIR coil harness connector to the SIR coil module assembly.
9. Install the steering column covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
10. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
11. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
12. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .

Read through the instructions. Thanks! However, the instuctions are much more complicated that it was actually to do.

Followed steps 1-7.

remove the four small phillips that hold on the SIR.

disconnect headlight/turn signal and windshield washer harnesses from the SIR.

You do not have to remove the headlight/turn signal or the windshield washer assemblies.

connect harness to new SIR.

install new SIR with four phillips screws.

remove yellow retaining clip.

FROM THIS POINT ON BE VERY CAREFUL THAT THE SIR DOES NOT COME APART! Work carfully and slowly. Speed kills.

turn SIR 180 degrees,

connect cruise control harness and radio control harnesses.

thread through the airbag wires.

Install steering wheel aligning arrow with indicator on shaft.

Tighten bolt

connect wires to airbag.

install airbag.

ChevyMgr, thanks for the help!

My buddy picked up the coil on the way home from work, came by my house and in about 45 minutes it was done.

BTW, when you need to buy parts from the dealer and cannot wait for gmpartsdirect.com, give them the price you can get it for from the web, and they may come down for you. Local parts mgr did. List is 51.62 and he sold it for 43.87, plus 8.75% for the Governator!

He is buying me a nice sushi dinner for this!
