code p0442

I have a code p0442 on a 2011 hhr and have replaced the purge valve part #214-1680 but it's apparently not the issue because to same code keeps returning. Looking for suggestions on what to look for. The gas cap is fine, no leaks there.

Also 2011, 2.2L. Gas cap replaced with OEM even tho it seemed fine. For several months, each time it was cleared, my P0442 kept coming back about a week or two after clearing. Impending Wintery weather made resulting inoperative remote start unacceptable, so 2week ago smoke test was done, no leaks found. Replaced the vent valve as a bit of a shot in the dark. Too early to tell if it’s fixed. Not counting on it, but at least the car’s driver thinks I’m trying.

Purge valve was replaced last year. If the code comes back I’ll try putting the original back in, as replacing it didn’t solve the prior issue, and it’s easy to do.

I’m guessing the leak is so tiny, any leaking smoke is too little to see. Anyone know if there’s such a thing as fluorescent smoke?

Either the purge valve

or the vent valve.

If you can blow air through the purge valve replace it. It should normally be closed. I use a piece of vacuum hose and try to pass air through from both sides.

Hole in vapor line? Recently a member found cracks in the rubber grommets on the top of the tank.

The possibilities are many for a small leak in a system that runs from one end of the car to the other, right?

To update, so far it’s been a couple of weeks and the code hasn’t returned, so we may have gotten lucky our shot in the dark with the vent valve.

Just happy this didn’t lead dropping the gas tank and taking everything apart and replacing random parts and conduits in the system. Yet.

Just realized I hadn’t updated. P0442 still not fixed, if cleared, just comes back after 2-3 weeks. Have stopped clearing it, just scan frequently to make sure some additional code isn’t hiding behind the CEL. Other priorities are in the way of revisiting this.

I did find this TSB. A little heavy for do-it-yerseffers but might facilitate better understanding of why this code can be so difficult if nothing else. I wish I would have had it to print out for my garage before they ran the (fruitless) smoke test.
