Cool Engine Light and T/C Light...

Why does the engine light and T/C light come on? I asked this qusetion before, and got no good answers... Try this question... What is the most common result of the engine light and the T/C light coming on? I've had new rotors, brake pads, drums and control arms put on... No engine light on before the fix, only T/C light on because of bad braking and shimmy in the front... Now, T/C light comes on after I drive a bit, and then a rough shift every take off from stop... The other day, after work, both lights came on after I hit the freeway to go home... Any ideas, and no code comments please... just give me a rough idea, just a few possible ideas for as it seems that the HHR has both an engine light and T/C light related problem... Could it be senors, if so which ones could it maybe be???

Just some ideas is all I ask...

OK, give this thread a read, all 15 pages of it....

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/how-tutorial-library-21/camshaft-position-actuator-solenoid-valve-replacement-w-pics-p0010-11-p0013-14-a-28779/

It outlines the most common cause and cure for what I suspect is your problem. But that being said, its just an educated guess until you have the codes pulled to verify the problem or point in another direction.

I'm not sure why you don't what to hear about codes, but not having them pulled is like going to the doctor and saying "I don't feel good, so fix me, but I'm not going to let you touch me or do any tests...good luck".

Is this problem connected to the brake work and suspension work you had done, I doubt it. Most likely its just an unhappy coincidence, but your best bet is to get the code/codes pulled and post them up here so we can do more than make an educated guess like I just did....because without anymore info than just general symptoms, and a gut feeling as to what is wrong, its still just a guess. I'd hate to see you waste time and money chasing a ghost down a blind alley.

843de - you have MUCH more patience than me for sure - I almost pointed him to that thread on his previous post, but if it turns out to be something other than one of the solenoids, then watch him get upset cause we sent him on a wild goose chase.

Yeah - go replace the sensors (actually they are called "solenoids" - so write that down for when you speak to your parts guy and takes your $150 or so). Just don't come back complaining it didn't fix your problem. You might also want to order a set of CV joints and a new throttle body at the same time to help narrow the fault down.

Oh, sorry I didn't see the "no code comments" - please ignore this msg.

Trans hard shifting = overheating = CEL. T/C could be really anything; like wheel bearings, low brake fluid, trans overheating, worn out brakes front and/or rear, calipers, poorly adjusted rear shoes, vacuum hoses, dirty injectors. The T/C can really be anything that makes the CEL come on, it does not actually relate to the brakes, just the "efficiency" of the drive train.

It sounds to me like you have an overheating problem, probably a blown head gasket, maybe just low coolant level, maybe a bad trans, maybe a bad t-stat.

(if the lights come on, then there are codes, they just may not tell you anything without the Service Manual in hand).

You asked for a few possible ideas.

Gremlins?

But seriously venomlegions, all you'll really get are ideas and shots in dark without a bit more concrete info, like the codes that we all know it has set & stored.

Auto parts stores will do it for free and give you a printout, 15 minutes of your time is a lot cheaper than dorking around and chucking parts at the problem in hopes of a cure.
