Maybe a bad fuel pump assy. I had a 2000 silverado, pump worked fine. needle wouldn't. replace it, worked fine since. this happened a few years ago. truck was about 6yrs old then.

I'm going in the direction of Greybeard's logic.....

Did you top off the take......squeeze the last penny of gas into the tank.... You may have damaged the charcoal filter.

Got the codes read at Autozone
In fact there were two codes, P0461 and P0463
Printouts for both codes were the same

Definition: Fuel level sending unit condition
Explanation: Poor electrical connection at the fuel level sending unit
Probable Cause: Failed fuel sending unit

Thanks for the help so far, but now what?

Well its either a bad sending unit, or a loose/corroded connector at the sending unit. In either case the fuel tank needs to be dropped, not the worst job ever, but one that is a pain in the butt regardless.

Here's an excellent write up on replacing the fuel pump by BeanWagon, it'll show you the location of the connectors on the fuel pump. You may find that changing the entire pump/sending unit is the only and best option.
