I showed how easy it is to pop the I/P to check the connector so that you could do it. 4 screws + 4 retainer clips.

There was a TSB for an earlier year about the connector being loopy.

Since ONLY the I/P is involved and there is 1 connector to the I/P doesn't it make sense that the best place to look is the connector? If not at the I/P then at the BCM

OR, fuses 7 & 16 on the BCM could be loose.

Just for good measure here is the connector info.

I'm in the process of of removing the cluster to check the connector. I've run into a snag trying to remove the connector. I can't seem to find the release on the connector, the old eye's aren't what they used to be. Anyone know how to take it apart, and what am I looking for when I get it apart?

Put it all back together again after plugging and unplugging the connector several times. Started the engine, and everything is working fine for now. I'll let it sit overnight and see then. Usually first thing in the morning it always messes up, so I will see.

Check those fuses. Get some dielectric grease to put on the connector pins.

Too late for the die electric grease now, everything's been put back together. I have checked the fuses. wondering if there's a relay for the instrument cluster?
Started it this morning, and it's back to it's old tricks.

I know it's not an HHR but my '99 Jeep Cherokee had the same kind of problem with the cluster gauges . The fix was a new connector plug and pigtail where it went in the back of the cluster. The pins had turned gray. A kind of corrosion on them. I learned about it on U-Tube
