Ok, first of all it's not my HHR. It's a customer of mine, he has a 2006 with 185,000 miles on it. And he coulnd't get his key out,and his shifter dosent want to work. The lever that you push to move the shifter dosent engage and the shifter dosent lock into position. It just slides up and down.

That's the broken shifter deal.... there's a fairly recent thread about a home brew repair and a few old threads about replacing the shifter...... Short of the home brew repair, replacement is the only option. The broken piece isn't available separately.

I suspect the home brew fixes won't last. The new shifter units have a redesigned mechanism that looks a lot sturdier than the plastic that was holding the metal rod.
