Lighter/power plug

My new to me HHR has the power plug on the console, with a lighter installed in it. From the element I could tell it had been used. Now, the circuit blows the fuse, even with the lighter removed. Any ideas?

If it blows with the element removed, then there is a short down there in the bottom (it's broken). If you want to use a cig lighter go purchase one for about $5 from a GM dealer and install it (fairly simple). Unless your car came with the "smoker package" I don't remember the code, it came equipped with a "power outlet" which will not work long with a lighter element. The same fuse powers the OBDII port, by the way.

Sounds like something dropped into the element and is shorting it out. Had a penny drop into one of my other cars. Thats how I found out.

Lighter

I pulled the console fuse access door to try to remove the plug. Almost couldn't reach in. Is there an easy way to remove it?

Stick your fingers into the air vents and yank. Yes, it's that easy!
