Mirror Whistle

So I acutally had the window down for a bit and discovered what I thought was a quiet whistle from the roof rack to be an EXTREMELY annoying (and much louder with the window down) whistle from the driver's side mirror. I put my hand over the gap b/w the mirror and door and it went away, so I know that's it. Seems to be the little gaps b/w the chrome and plastic. Anyone ever heard a cop cruiser passing by while hauling arse? That is the sound (you'll know what I'm talking about if you've heard it).

Anyone else experience this or suggest a fix? I am an die hard winder down kinda guy and this will make me insane. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

There was TSB on this. No big deal to fix.

Look under the TSB section here and it shows what needs done and how to do it.

#09-08-58-001: Outside Rearview Mirror Wind Noise (Install Flocking Tape and Shim Stock) - (Jan 6, 2009)

Subject: Outside Rearview Mirror Wind Noise (Install Flocking Tape and Shim Stock)

Models: 2006-2009 HHR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
Some customers may comment about a more than desirable amount of wind noise coming from the outside rearview mirror(s).

Cause
Air intrusion may be occurring between the outside rearview mirror cover and the mirror housing, which may create a noise when the air passes over the holes in the mirror housing.

Correction
Install flocking tape and adhesive back shim stock to the outside rearview mirror housing. The pattern is noted in the steps below:

Using a trim stick, or suitable tool, carefully remove the outside rearview mirror cover.

Important: The mirror cover has retaining tabs and features that must be positioned into the hole locations noted above. Do NOT cover any of these holes with the tape or shim stock.

Install a 1/2 width piece of 5/8" x 1/8" Kent Automotive™ Adhesive Back Shim Stock (1), or equivalent, around the outside of the larger rectangular hole in the mirror housing.
Install 1/2 width pieces of Kent Automotive ™ 30 mm wide BRS Flocking tape, or equivalent, around the perimeter and underside of the mirror housing.

3.1. Install pieces of flocking tape to the top, sides, and bottom of the back rounded surface of the mirror housing.

Tip
Install the tape just inside the outer edge of the back rounded surface.

3.2. Install another piece of flocking tape between the shim stock and the side tape, being sure to avoid the retainer hole locations.

3.3. Install pieces of flocking tape starting at the shim stock, and wrapping around to the underside of the mirror housing. Ensure the tape is inboard of the retainer hole locations.

Carefully position the outside rearview mirror cover to the mirror housing and push to engage the retaining tabs. Ensure all the retainers are fully seated.
Parts Information
Flocking Tape and Shim Stock is available from Kent Automotive at 1-888-YES-KENT or online at www.kent-automotive.com.

I hear a faint whistle. But I usually drive with the windows up. I didn't realize there was TSB recall on it.

The pry tools are cheap and you have pictures where to pop it off. Once it is off it is a piece of cake. I did a Malibu with no issue.

I guess it just depends what PITA is worse the cover removal or the noise?

Not a recall, a TSB for the fix for the problem. Try a search for wind noise I seem to recall others have used other methods to fix the noise.

So I went down to a friends body shop and fixed the mirror. The directions certainly helped, but I'll add some insider info (from what I encountered, so take it as you see fit)

First off, it is much, MUCH easier to release the tabs from the inside rather than trying to pop them from the outside. To do this, you'll need to simply move the mirror to it's extremes in travel motion. When you do this, you'll see the tabs on the inside. Simply stick your removal tool of choice in the slot and pop the clip. Pops right off in about 20 seconds.

We prepped the mirror surface and inside of the cover with alcohol and a towel. Followed the pictures from the TSB posted above on where to apply the two sided tape (which is what we used instead of the stripping suggested in TSB). Plain old 3m two sided... Doubled it up around the large hole and ran a strip all the way around the mirror. ONLY put it on the places shown in the TSB...

When reinstalling the cover, insert the BOTTOM first. You'll notice that there is a straight "pin" coming from the inside of the cover. This helps guide the cover into the slots correctly. Once that is in place, push the cover straight on firmly until it meets the seams on the mirror. Wipe off all the finger prints and readjust the mirror. VIOLA! No whistle.

Sorry folks, no pics I forgot my phone and my camera on the way down to the shop. IF I have to do the passenger side (hoping I don't) I'll take some pics then.

Hope this info helps
