Mount up! We’re tracking shimmy shakes! An engine transmission mount problem
Hi @Oldblue Thanks for putting this together. I replaced the top motor mount recently and I'm about to tackle the two lower transmission mounts. I think you mentioned supporting the transmission by using a jack and piece of wood directly under the transmission fluid pan. I recently did a fluid and gasket replacement and this pan is quite thin, so I want to make sure I don't do any damage to the transmission pan or pan gasket. Am I understanding correctly that using a jack and wood directly under the transmission pan is the preferred transmission support point while swapping out these mounts? There might be a "bell housing" or similar next to it I could use, but don't want to overcomplicate things. As always, thanks. Hope you're having a good weekend thus far. I'm almost done fixing up the HHR. :)
I did use a 2x6 about 18” long from front to rear under the transmission pan because it wasn’t in the centre of the pan it didn’t dent it. If you can support the transmission under a part of the case , that would be much better. I only jacked it a bit to line up the thru bolt and only change one mount at a time. I did the front first , then the rear after all fasteners had their bolts started in the threads , I tightened and torqued them without the jack under the pan . Wow that was 8 years ago? Time flies!
I’ve since changed all the mounts in the BlackSwan, didn’t need to make a new how to !

Replaced both lower transmission mounts with minimal issues. The rear through bolt was tightened as much as possible using an 1/2” wrench with some extensions but couldn’t get my torque wrench locked on enough to verify 74ftlbs without starting to round off the bolt so I stopped. For the record, I did use a 2x6 under the transmission pan for slight movement I needed to start the through bolts by hand. All went well I think. Thanks again.
