Need help figuring out possible transmission problem

2007 Chevy HHR LT 2.4L
mileage 119,000

error code P0014
error code P0420

When I drive the vehicle there is no problem except for some hard shifting Which I'm assuming replacing the exhaust camshaft solenoid should take care of that. When I put it in reverse it engages for about 2 feet then I feel a lot of resistance almost as if a binding motion is going on. If I give it enough gas it'll move the car but extremely slowly . I did want to force it hopes of damaging anything. I placed it in neutral and pushed the car back. Any ideas on what it could be?

Looks like you do need that exhaust camshaft solenoid replaced like you mentioned - also read this thread related to the p0420- https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/prob...riellys-54016/

P0420 is one of Those codes which require careful and methodical diagnostics, whopper has given you an excellent starting point with the thread he linked.

The binding/losing reverse gear may or may not be connected, the 4T-45E transmissions are stout pieces, but they can fail. When was the transmission serviced, or is it still on the "Factory Fill" from new?

In other words, the transmission issue might be totally unconnected to the P0420 code, but first you need to attend to all the other possible failure modes and then start thinking "oh boy, transmission problem".
