As sleeper said, try rockauto.com, NAPA, Advance, AutoZone, or any good parts house and you should be able to find the actuator solenoids at a very reasonable price. Link to thread below.....

All of them carry the sensor but not the solenoid. Couldn't find them on Rockauto.com either, finally ordered them from gmpartsgiant.com. Got both for $80 including shipping.

Rather than just throw parts at a problem, I'm more the methodical type. So I have be researching this on the net for the last week. More than 90% of those with this or simular symtoms and codes have fixed it with changing the solenoids (I hope the odds are with me). I do appreciate all the help and WHOPPER's link is an excellent road map for the procedure. I'll update when I get the parts installed. I also plan to stay active on this site. It is a great resource and wish I had found it sooner. Thanks for all the input.

Good luck with it - on a previous post you asked if the parts were interchangeable - I kinda doubt it (but may be wrong) as the parts have different part numbers. When I had a problem, it only pointed to one solenoid, but at the price of them I decided to replace both of them - just seemed easier rather than have to do the other one down the road. And I kept the good one and boxed it up as a "spare".

I wasn't planning to interchange the solenoids, I know they are a different part. I was going to rule out the camshaft position sensors since both intake and exhaust have the same part number. But I have already ordered both the solenoids now.

I was appalled when I saw what came out when I changed the oil when the DIC said so the first time so I went to changing it at 4,000 miles and it still looks ugly when it comes out, but I'm sure the synthetic is protecting well for at least 4,000.

Oil is supposed to be dark. If its not, its not doing its job. Synthetic should be good for 7500 - 10k miles. If you're changing it more frequently than that you're just throwing money away.

Aren't emission control systems warrantied for 8years/80K by Federal law? It used to be 5/50K. Cam sensors are definitely part of the emission controls. Almost everything electrical on the engine is there to meet emission regulations.

What is covered under the federally mandated 8/80 emissions warranty are components designated as "Major Emission Control Components" by the EPA...here is the exact verbiage from the EPA regulations.

EPA420-F-96-020

"There are three specified major emission control components,
covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use on 1995
and newer vehicles:

* Catalytic converters.

* The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU).

* The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD).

Catalytic converters are critical emission control components
that have been installed on most cars and trucks manufactured since
1975. Since engines don't burn fuel completely during the combustion
process, the exhaust contains a significant amount of harmful
pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and oxides of
nitrogen. The catalytic converter aids the conversion of these
pollutants to less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, water
vapor, nitrogen, and oxygen before the exhaust is expelled into the
environment.

The electronic emissions control unit or computer monitors
certain powertrain functions and controls various operating parameters
to help the vehicle run efficiently and with the lowest possible
emissions. Ignition, transmission function, air injection, exhaust
gas recirculation (EGR), engine operating temperature and fuel system
parameters are some of the systems monitored and/or controlled by the
electronic emissions control unit.

The onboard emissions diagnostic device monitors the operation of
a vehicle's emission control system and alerts the driver with a
dashboard light when malfunctions occur. The system will record where
the problem is occurring and assist automotive technicians in
diagnosing and repairing emission control malfunctions. Since some
emission control malfunctions do not have an adverse effect on vehicle
performance, they can go undetected by the driver for quite some time.
The onboard diagnostic device will help catch malfunctions early,
preventing a significant output of harmful exhaust emissions from your
vehicle, and possibly in time to be covered by the emissions control
warranty. Often this "device" is part of the electronic control unit
mentioned above.

In the future, there may be other parts or components that
qualify for this coverage. Check your owner's manual or warranty book
for possible additional coverage."

I believe if the vehicle in question is within the standard GM warranty period the parts are covered, but once out of warranty they are not included in the 8/80 emissions warranty coverage.

It's not the sensors, its the camshaft position solenoids. I'm not sure I trust this dealer right now anyway and I don't have time to start over with another dealer. I'm taking the car to AZ in a week for vacation.

I have about 39000 on it right now, so it is out of the 3/36000 warranty.

Update on my P0016 code problem. Finally got the camshaft solenoids and put them in today. I cleared the codes and took it out for a spin. After several trips today neither the CEL or the codes have returned and the car seems to have its old pep back.

Many thanks to WHOPPER and all who gave help and advise.

I think I will upgrade to premium membership to celebrate.
