This brings back memories of fabricating a shaft with a flat on the end to fit down the distributor hole (distributor removed first of course) to spin the oil pump with a drill on a small block V8 after a rebuild.

I just did a new GM long block in mine. Changed the oil immediately after the break in procedure in case there was any dirt / trash in the engine (also, the break in lube "can" plug up an oil filter if used excessively), and changed it again yesterday at 1000 miles. I also used convetional oil for the first two break in runs to help with seating rings, then swithed to full synthetic yesterday.

Never had much luck with those priming tools until I took an old HEI and turned the teeth off the dist. gear and turned the upper body down about 1.5" smaller diameter for clearance on certain engines. Worked like a champ!
