UPDATE:
ran car with tires in the air...no noise(no load either)
rotated tires....noise still there.
changed air pressure(added 5 psi) noise got louder
changed LF hub...
NOISE GONE!

thanks folks. seriously....it IS the hub, it WAS the hub, and now the HUB is new.

I ended up writing a HOW TO article about the swap.
it was easier than the thermostat!

It has gotten worse over the last month since the noise appeared. Now the noise starts at about 30mph and you can hear it wind down all the way to a complete stop. Yesterday I jacked up the front and spun each front wheel by hand with the car in neutral (5-speed). Unlike when I tried this when the noise first appeared, I could feel and hear the rumble as I spun the left front wheel. The right front wheel was silent when spun. Despite the fact that the noise has gotten worse and now you can hear it when spinning the tire by hand, the bearing is still tight. No noticeable play in the wheel when I push and pull in all directions.

So I am now going to order the left front hub and new spindle nut from Rock Auto and I will probably replace them early next week (along with the new control arm bushing and stabilizer bar end link).

Fastsuv,
Did you change out the hub yet? Noise gone? I am about to do the same thing to mine. Just wanted to know your results.

Yes, I changed out the hub this weekend, along with the rear bushing on the control arm and the sway bar link.

The noise is completely gone. When I spin the old hub by hand, I can feel the grinding inside of it.

I don't have to turn up the radio to full volume anymore to cover up the bearing roar!

I've read a lot about trouble/replacing the front wheel bearings, anyone replace the rear bearings (drum brakes)? Replaced my front bearings, still have a howling noise, tire rubbing noise, bad brake noise (new brakes all around) and another noise I can't quite put my finger on. Seems to get a little louder with the foot brake applied. Ordered rear bearings to replace them and will do that soon. Any experience with the rear bearings would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

same issue

I'm having the same issue. I had a front end alignment and my driver side wheel bearing replaced but it is still making a lot of noise! so it's back at the shop. Oh and for some reason my gauges for my tire pressure no longer read. Anybody else have that problem?

I cannot isolate it.
122k
tires have even wear, no OOR issues, drives smooth and straight.
Tires have 18k on them(all 4)

hard to describe, so here goes:
it sounds like when a large 4x4 with knobby tires is next to you.
at freeway speeds around 70 mph it is more pronounced and increases the more distance I drive.
when slowing down to a stop at a signal light(45-0 mph) it sounds like the truck tires as a truck slows.
when at freeway/or any speed over 40 mph if I shift to neutral, noise remains constant and only changes in pitch as car decelerates.
if I shift to neutral and rev engine while at speed, noise remains unchanged.

I suspected a tire issue...as if a tire is under-inflated.
such is not the case

the noise appeared suddenly, not progressively over time.

noise does not change in pitch or volume if wheel is turned/when cornering.

any suggestions?

The tire pressure sensors in each rim have batteries in them. The average life span for the batteries is about 5 years(give or take)
If your car is 5 years or so in age(you didn't bother to post up that info) then it could be as simple as a battery issue.
Have your local tire shop check it for you.

Problem Fixed

LOL I'm Sorry... I drive a 2008 HHR. So i got the passenger wheel bearing fixed today and the deafening noise is gone! I'm so happy! i mean 230 bucks later...but that isn't as bad as it could have been. the tire sensors aren't working still but i can live with that. the chevy place said it would be about 150, and im not sure if that meant a tire, or for all... i'll just do it the old fashioned way from here on out! thanks yall!

If you need a state safety inspection, it will fail because the TPMS is broken.

Maybe ask questions of service providers so you can be informed. Could be they are working and they are all either over or under pressured, you could die like the soccer moms driving Ford SUVs that caused the TPMS law.

All of this in one day??!!!!
