I replaced mine with Spectre's 8741 flexible intake hose.

I pulled the staples out of both end connectors. They fit on the hose perfectly. The fender end uses one of the connector sleeves included. The other end screws right on to the coil of the hose. I bought mine at O'Reilly's auto parts for about $15.

Is there any specific reason the woolley worm material is used? Cost? Some esoteric emissions thing?

Yeah, but the flimsy wrapped part glued or folded together, not to sturdy!
