non-limp mode check engine light
Seeing as the thermostat is a common failure on the HHR and the ECT sensor is not a common failure........ Hmmmmm
Obviously it must be the ECT sensor........
Now, seeing as this thread is quite old, and you were seriously low on coolant.... Ummmmm, did you ever figure out where it went???? Neighbor's kids with a siphon hose? Aliens? Alien kids with a siphon hose? Nevermind, You filled the tank (hopefully you keep your eye on the level now, right?) and had the code cleared, has the situation come back?
Troubleshooting 101.......
IF NOT...... The problem is one of leakage and you need to track that down.
IF SO....... It's more than likely thermostat, outside possibility of the failed sensor
Here, I've got an idea. Why not take it to a shop and have it fixed. Changing either of these parts or any other parts in the coolant system will have you voiding your lease agreement anyways, you are not going to be fixing this yourself. Not trying to be mean here, but seriously now.......

If I had the cash I would be taking it in, and if the service rep I dealt with last time wasn't being a douche and telling me that they couldn't facilitate me for something that MAY have been their fault..

Just below and to the right of the oil filter, at the end of the radiator hose.
