I'm trying to relate the switches to an engine power problem. How? Does it go into limp mode or something?

As I understand it: the SS has "lift" function that controls engine speed when shifting. I have no direct experience with either SS or 5 speed, though may be completely wrong.

Well, the computers want to know when the pedal is at the top of travel. Why do they need this information? Not for cruise control or neutral safety, that's the other switch. Maybe for engine management.

My tune from ZZP, first gear detuned, to accommodate the stock clutch. The ECM knows what gear the manual transmission is in.

So if the sensor tells the ECM that the pedal is not at top of travel, perhaps the engine is limited.

That would be if they programmed it to avoid massive slip when the clutch is not fully engaged. I don't think they really care if you burn up the clutch.
I can't get my head around this. I'm thinking there's something else going on here. I would love to look at live data while observing this. It'd be nice if he had recording ability on a good scan tool.

Can you think of another reason for this "top of travel " sensor?

Nope, can’t think of any other reason or function for it.

Update: SOLVED!!! Faulty Brake switch B. Had to give a solution for the next HHR owner with this random issue to find. haha

The story, If you want it. On top of everything else I replaced, I replacing the 2 clutch position sensors, still no success. Still had this odd clutch issue on and off. A few months ago my clutch started fully working again, only for a few days. When the issue arose again I got a P0719 code: Brake switch B - Circuit Low. I checked the circuit and replaced the switch. My clutch started working immediately AND my cruise control (which hadn't worked since purchase) started working as well. Weird issue to have but if your engine is loosing power at the clutch top position in gear 1 and 2 and your cruise control is not functioning either then try replacing your brake switch B. I have no reasoning as to why.

Awesome news, glad you got it fixed, even as bizarre as it is! The brake switch fixed the clutch issue.
ours is not to reason why, just fix it and scratch our heads and wonder!

You never mentioned the cruise control. Does your state have brake and safety inspection? I am guessing that your brake lights have not been working all this time. Maybe just the CHMSL.
The cruise control will not operate if the third brake light doesn't work.
The 2 sensors are rheostats not on/off switches.

I've had the vehicle for 5 years and it'll do this for 3-6 months then the problem goes away for a few months before returning. I've tried to research and troubleshoot when its acting up but not alot of info out there I can find about this problem. Hoping someone here has encountered this.

Things done. Checked ground wires (could have missed one or more), replace clutch and pressure plate.

Any thoughts on what the cause could be? Thanks in advance.
They all need to be taken apart and roughed up clean. The eyes and the grounding surfaces.
