p0340, new ecu needed?

hey everyone
my moms '06 has thrown a p0340 but car has no cam sensor. reading through some posts, it seems like shes in the market for a new ecu huh? i put on a new coil pack and ignition control unit in hopes that that would/could be the fix, an easy way out.
i found sellers on ebay that say they sell programmed units, any thoughts on this route?
she cant afford having it towed to the local dealer for the flash, and shes tight on moneys, and so am I.

thanks everyone.

p.s
also, could this be a mechanical timing issue? i havent poped the valve cover yet

Without more details, such as what engine you are talking about, and how many miles on it, does it actually start and run? it's kind of hard to guess at what hints we can give you.
ECU? Not very likely at all - right Donbrew?

Welcome to the site, I recommend checking the wiring harnesses as shown here read possible solutions.

You could troubleshoot instead of throwing parts at it.
I am guessing this is a 2.2L engine? Are there any other codes?
If I were throwing parts the next one would be the crankshaft position sensor.

2006 2.2. roughly 100k miles. no cam sensor to be found. it does start and run but rough idle, cant rev it it, starter stays on after the engine is started.
originally, she threw a p0303, a compression check showed good, and the smell of fuel was present. i replaced the coil and the p0303 went away, still gone, but now this. ill check the crank sensor voltage and wiring tomorrow.

sorry for the lack of info on the starter thread, started drinking for the evening and ready for bed.

Sure does point at the crank sensor. Since that is how the computer knows to turn it off.

But way more likely wiring is the problem. The sensor is a coil of wire embedded in epoxy.

true.i came across previous threads here that discussed the fault being the ecu as this year hhr is without the cam pos. sensor. ill check it out tomorrow, hopefully i can find the time

Donbrew wrote this in a posting as mentioned above that explains some of the details on how that early 2.2 engine runs:

"2006 does not use cam sensors. The position of the cam is calculated based on data from the ICM.
If you understand the way Harley-Davidson handles the spark, it is much the same. 2 plugs fire each cycle,"

People that blame computers for single faults are lazy parts throwers. That's OK, if you are not the one paying for the parts. But it makes more sense to me to toss the cheaper parts first.
